[Indexed as: (Adams case), “From Bier to Courtroom. – Mother Summoned to Explain Refusal to Let Father See His Child Tells of Its Death.” The Chicago Daily Tribune (Il.), Dec. 14, 1900]
Mrs. Helen Adams was summoned yesterday from the bier where lay her dead child to Judge Dunne’s court to give explanation why she should not let her husband see their child. Then it was that court sand the father learned from the mother’s lips the news of the death.
Robert Adams married the woman five years ago. A little girl was born to them and they lived happily for a time, but soon the husband, it is said, commenced to mistreat his wife and left her.
Adams secured possession of the child and the mother commenced habeas corpus proceedings against him before Judge Dunne. The custody of the little one was awarded to the mother, but the father was to be permitted to see it at stated intervals. Then divorce proceedings were commenced by the wife.
In September Adams secured a writ summoning his wife to appear in court to explain why she should not allow him to see the child, but bailiffs could not find her. On Wednesday she was granted a divorce and at 9 o’clock that night the child died. Yesterday morning the bailiff who had been looking for her since September found her and took her to the courtroom, where she told her today. The father will be permitted to attend the little one’s funeral.
